Parliamentary Secretary Eve Adams
Reinforces Government’s Commitment to Protect Cenotaphs and Monuments

Toronto – On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Eve Adams, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minster of Veterans Affairs, visited Malvern C.I. War Memorial today and spoke e before about Government’s plans to support communities in protecting cenotaphs and monuments. The Boys of Malvern Memorial, located at Malvern Collegiate Institute, suffered vandalism in November 2011, shortly after it had been restored.

“Cenotaphs and monuments are sacred places that recognize the sacrifices and achievements of generations of great Canadians. When one is vandalized it touches the whole community and needs to be restored quickly,” said Minister Blaney. “In the near future, I plan to introduce an initiative which will help fast-track applications for funding to assist in repairing damage to cenotaphs and monuments as a result of vandalism.”

PS Adams reinforced Government’s recent commitment to increase penalties for vandalism to cenotaphs and monuments with the introduction Private Member’s Bill C-217: An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (mischief relating to war memorials).

“It is devastating to see acts of vandalism and destruction at these sacred places of honour. Such actions dishonour the sacrifices of many men and women, sacrifices that were made on behalf of each of us,” said PS Adams. “Our Government is working to help communities make necessary repairs to vandalized cenotaphs and memorials, as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, the Government of Canada partners with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation’s heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.

Applications to this program can be submitted at any time during the year. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding. To learn more about Veterans Affairs Canada’s Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program and other programs and services, visit veterans.gc.ca.
