Banting the Soldier

Dr. Frederick Banting who discovered Insulin which saved the lives of millions of diabetics around the world is featured in the cover story by Adam Saunders in the latest issue of The Maple Leaf. Banting’s military career started in 1912 with the 36th Peel Regiment. The issue will infiltrate your mail box before Christmas. Keep a sharp lookout.

The cover illustration is from a black and white photo of Professor Banting at the University of Toronto during the Second World War. Managing Editor David Fuller colourized the photo, paying particular attention to the medal ribbons on Banting’s uniform. The awards, top row, from left to right are: KBE, MC, British War Medal, Victory Medal. If anyone knows what the two awards on the lower row are, please let us know. The colours of those two ribbons were taken from a painted portrait.
